The message looks like every other summer message. The difference is you have never seen the driver in your gali, and they want money on the phone before the hose exists.
This is not a lesson in how fraud works. It is a household rule. In a small Rajasthan town, water arrives on a truck you can walk up to. Payment follows the pipe in the tank, or it follows a man your neighbour can name. An advance to a stranger in a brand-new group is how a dry morning becomes a dry afternoon with a thinner bank balance.
Close the payment screen. Call a known number. If you have no known number, ask two houses before you send a rupee.
Checks before you send a booking amount
Who added you to the group? A neighbour you can knock, or a number you do not know? A forwarded invite from a forwarded invite is not a reference.
Has anyone on your street received water from this driver this week? Ask in person, not only in the group. Groups are full of people who are also hoping.
Does the message refuse cash at the gate? A real local tanker still takes cash or a payment after unloading more often than they demand a prepaid booking from a new customer at dawn.
Is the rate far below what your lane paid yesterday? Panic cheap is a bait. Reliable men are busy, not deeply discounted.
Can they tell you your landmark without you sending a pin first, if they claim they “fill this colony every day”? If they do not know the narrow corner, they are not your regular.
Do not share extra personal details in the group. Consumer numbers, photos of bills, and ID are not required to book a tanker.
If they insist on an advance, offer to pay a known driver instead, or offer to pay when the tanker is at the gate with the engine off and the hose in your hand. Watch what they do.
Photos and proof if you already paid
If money already left, screenshot the chat, the payment, the group name, and the number. Screenshot the time. Do not delete the group in anger before you save it.
If a tanker later arrives that is not the one you paid, photograph the plate anyway. You may still take water from a real driver and deal with the payment mess separately. Do not hand a second full amount in confusion.
If no vehicle comes, warn the lane with facts: number, amount, time. Do not add rumours. Put it in the physical neighbour circle, not only in another huge group.
Keep the bank or wallet SMS. That is the record. A forwarded “he is a thief” sticker is not.

If your street books together, let one person who has met the driver speak. Five prepaid “bookings” to five numbers is five chances to lose.
Agree in the lane: no advance to a new face. Cash or pay at the tank. That social rule is worth more than a warning poster.

For the money, use the official complaint routes of the payment app or the bank, and the police if you choose, with your screenshots. Do not hire a stranger who claims they can “reverse it today” for another fee.

If a real tanker short-delivered after a genuine fill, that is a different path: measure, photograph, talk at the gate. Do not call a short load a fake advance. Keep the words accurate so neighbours still trust you.
If you admin a useful local group, set a simple rule in the description: no prepaid to unknown numbers. Remove booking-fee messages. A clean group is a public good in May.
Approximate INR rates that change by ward
Real tanker prices still sit in the wide summer bands of a small town: often hundreds to a few thousand rupees per load depending on litres and distance. A “booking fee” of several hundred rupees demanded before anyone has seen a truck should make you pause. Known local drivers sometimes take a small token from a regular house. That is a relationship you can walk to. It is not the same as a prepaid demand in a group created last night.
