At 5:30am the motor is already humming and the courtyard is still dark. You climb because the neighbour shouted that water is dripping on their tin shed. The Sintex-style tank looks fine until a torch finds a hairline crack, wet dust, and a slow fan of water on the parapet. That is often the only live hour on a North Indian line, and the crack is spending it on the roof.
Switch the motor off while you look. Every extra minute of pumping is water you will not have at noon.
Checks before you patch or replace
Decide what is actually leaking. A wet outlet thread can look like a tank crack from the courtyard. Wipe the wall, wait two minutes, and see where the shine returns. A vertical wet line from a fitting is a nipple or union. A star or a long split in the plastic is the tank.
Tap around the crack. Soft, chalky plastic that powders under a fingernail is UV damage. Rajasthan sun on a dark tank cooks the wall for years and then the wall gives up. A tank that still feels tough, with one clean split near a mould line, may have been over-tightened at the outlet or sat on a sharp brick.
Check the stand. Many roofs in Jhunjhunu still rest a 500 or 1000 litre tank on four bricks and a plywood scrap. If one brick has sunk, the tank twists and a hairline opens. Level the stand only after the tank is light. Never jack a full tank.
Empty to a safe level before any patch. Leave tea and a bath if you can, but do not leave a ballooning wall. Afternoon heat expands plastic. A full cracked tank can split wider.
Photos of the crack and the wet roof
Photograph in daylight and again at the next supply hour. You want a wide shot of the tank on its stand, a close shot of the crack with a coin for scale, and the wet stain on the parapet or the neighbour’s shed. If a room below is stained, include a date in the frame.
Photograph the manufacturer stamp and the moulded capacity. Lookalike tanks in the hardware bazaar do not share one warranty desk. Without the stamp, you will be told it is local and the talk ends.
If you already patched with tape or a weld stick, photograph the patch before it fails. That record stops a second foolish patch, and it helps a joint family decide who pays for the new tank.
Do not stand on a wet parapet in chappals at dawn for a close-up. Use the stair side and tell someone downstairs you are on the roof.
Neighbour timing and the hour you actually get
Ask the house whose roof is getting wet, and the house that shares your motor. In a Shekhawati lane the supply hour is a rumour until three families agree. If you mop while their valve is open, you lose the week.
Write the hour as people live it: line from 5:20 to 6:05, motor off at 6:10. Then see whether the leak is only during fill or all day. A day-long drip is a storage failure. Wetness only while the motor runs may be overflow, a loose union, or a crack that opens under weight.
If you share a roof tank with an upstairs kitchen, agree a stop time. Ten extra minutes after the wall is already weeping will put water into a bedroom through a roof joint.
Complaint path if the problem is not only your tank
A plastic tank crack is usually a household job. People still mix it with PHED because water hits the road. Walk the drip. If it starts at your outlet and follows the wall, it is yours. If a wet circle sits on the road away from your downpipe, treat that as a line leak with its own photos.
For dealer warranty, carry the bill and the stamp photo. Shops exchange mould faults within the printed years. UV cracks after eight summers are almost never a warranty case. Do not waste a supply morning in a queue for a no.
The ward office will not mediate a private roof fight. If a tenant below is damaged, keep dates and photos. For the tank itself the path is plumber, dealer, replacement. If a society owns the tank, put the photos in the group the same morning.
Approximate INR rates that change by ward
These are household ballparks for a small Rajasthan town, not a printed list. They move with summer and with how far a tank must be carried up a stair.
A 500 litre plastic tank often sits around Rs 3,500 to Rs 6,500. A 1000 litre tank is commonly discussed in the Rs 6,500 to Rs 12,000 band. A plumber to disconnect and refit may ask Rs 400 to Rs 1,200, more if the stand must be rebuilt.
A stopgap weld or epoxy might be Rs 150 to Rs 500 in materials. That patch is days, not a summer. A new ball cock, if you mistook overflow for a crack, is often Rs 180 to Rs 450. A mason for a proper stand can be Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000.
The same tank can differ by a thousand rupees between a wholesale bazaar and a highway shop. Confirm standing in front of the tank.
FAQ
Can I run the motor if the crack is only a hairline?
Fill to a lower mark if the wall is not spreading. Paint a safe line well below the crack and watch the first fill. If the hairline opens as the tank gains weight, switch off. A morning hairline can be an afternoon split.
Will a plastic weld last through May?
On a UV-rotten wall, usually not. Use a patch only to buy days while you arrange a new tank. A patched tank that empties on a 46-degree afternoon leaves you buying a tanker at panic rates.
The leak is dripping on the neighbour. Who pays?
If the water left your tank or fittings, it is your roof. Photos with dates prevent a shouting match. You owe a dry roof, not a new shed for old rust. Fix the tank first. Do not keep filling while you argue.
Should I buy a bigger tank so I can skip a day of supply?
Only if the slab can take the weight. A 2000 litre tank on four bricks is how roofs crack. A sound 1000 litre tank that does not leak beats a larger tank that twists in the first summer.
Short note
Paani Atka is not a jal board and not a PHED desk. We do not sell tanks or honour warranties. Rates above are approximate and they change by ward and by shop. Confirm on the ground. If the drip is a public line, file that with the helpline on your bill. If it is your plastic tank, the next step is a dry roof and a tank that can hold the only hour you get.
