At 5:30am the starter still clicked like a faithful dog. The MCB on the kitchen board stayed up. Two minutes later the motor died with a hot smell from the courtyard shed. I waited, touched the body with the back of my hand, and pulled away. In a Bikaner lane in May that heat is not “normal running.” It is a winding asking to be left alone. Restarting because the overhead tank is empty is how a Rs 8,000 motor becomes a Rs 8,000 paperweight.

An MCB that does not trip only tells you the short is not violent enough to throw the breaker. A weak winding, a tight bearing, a dry suction, or a jammed impeller can still cook the motor behind a healthy MCB. The thermal overload in a DOL starter may click off. A cheap starter may not. Your job at 5:30am is to stop, not to prove you can fill the tank before the line dies.

Home checks before you call the winder

Kill the starter. Do not restart for at least twenty minutes. Feel the motor body. If it is too hot to keep your hand, the copper inside has already had a bad morning. Check the water. Open the underground tank lid. If the suction strainer is sucking air, you have a dry run. A dry run trips by heat, not by the MCB. Fill enough water to cover the foot valve, prime if it is a monoblock, and only then think of a short test.

Look at the voltage if you have a cheap plug meter. A long colony cable on a shared 5:30am load can sag. A motor that trips only when every house runs at once may be starving for volts, not dying from a winding. That is still abuse. Get the electrician to check the supply at the motor terminals while it runs, not only at the kitchen board.

Spin the shaft if the pump is a surface monoblock and it is safe to do so with power off. A shaft that will not turn is a jammed impeller or a seized bearing. Forcing the starter then is how you burn the winding in one go. Sand from a boring, a rag in the foot valve, or scale from an old tank all jam impellers.

Listen on a short start. A healthy motor takes load in a second and the pipe kicks. A winding that is going will hum, slow down, and smell of varnish. Two minutes of that smell is enough evidence. You do not need a third try “just to confirm.”

A swollen capacitor can make a single-phase motor struggle and heat. Replacing that tin is cheaper than a rewind. If you do not know which tin it is, leave it.

Photos to take for the shop and the electrician

Photograph the nameplate. HP, phase, head, and serial. Photograph the starter and the MCB position. Photograph the underground tank water level. Photograph any burnt mark on the terminal box. Photograph the suction pipe joints with a tissue pressed on them so a leak shows wet.

If you take the motor to the winder, photograph the coupling and the base before they unbolt it. Winders in a hurry swap parts. Your photo is the only memory of how it sat. Keep the capacitor, the starter, and the cable lugs in the same bag if they come off.

Write the time it ran before trip. “Two minutes, three mornings, MCB stayed up” is a better history than “motor is bad.” A winder who hears dry-run will often refuse warranty language later. That is useful even when you are paying cash.

Neighbour timing when everyone starts together

In a North Indian colony the 5:30am minute is a stampede. Voltage dips. If your motor trips only then and runs fine at 11am on tanker water, tell the electrician that sentence. Ask who else tripped. A sick transformer cooks several pumps. That is a power-office complaint, not a rewind. If only yours dies, the winding, the suction, or your starter is the story. Do not borrow the neighbour’s starter to test. You mix faults.

Complaint and repair path

Power side first if the MCB is hot or the cable is discoloured. That is an electrician, and if the fault is on the pole, a written complaint to the local distribution office. Motor side is a pump mechanic. Winding is a winder. These are three people. One boy with a bag of tools who “does everything” will guess.

Ask the mechanic to measure insulation if they have a megger. A wet winding after a flooded pit will trip and smell. Drying and varnishing is one job. A full rewind is another. Do not rewind a motor that only needed a dry-out and a new bearing.

If the motor is still in warranty, stop. Read the card. Most cards void dry run, voltage swing, and sand. Take the motor as it is, with the nameplate photo, to the dealer. A home rewind in the lane will close the warranty on the spot.

After repair, fit an overload. Fit a dry-run sensor if the tank can go empty. That is cheaper than the next rewind. Run a five-minute test with someone watching the tank, then stop and feel the body. Warm is normal. Painful is not.

Approximate INR rates that vary by ward

A capacitor is often Rs 150 to Rs 600. A bearing job without rewind may be Rs 400 to Rs 1,500. A 1 HP surface rewind in a town market is commonly Rs 1,200 to Rs 3,500. A 1.5 HP submersible rewind often sits at Rs 2,500 to Rs 7,000, plus Rs 800 to Rs 3,000 to pull the pump. A DOL starter with overload can be Rs 800 to Rs 2,500. A dry-run or float kit is often Rs 400 to Rs 2,000 fitted. Quotes vary by ward, copper that week, and whether they climb a pit. Get two quotes. Pay after a trial run. If the column is old, ask the borewell man what a fishing job costs.

FAQ

The MCB never trips. Does that mean the motor is healthy?

No. An MCB looks for a heavy short. A weak winding heats slowly. The starter overload should catch that. Many kitchen MCBs never see the extra current in time. Heat on the body is the real alarm.

Can I keep restarting if I wait five minutes?

Five minutes is not a cool-down for a winding that already smelled. You shave the insulation each time. Fill water, find air in the suction, or stop until a mechanic sees it. Empty-tank heroics are how motors die in May.

Is a rewind as good as a new motor?

Sometimes it runs for years. Sometimes the shop uses thin copper and it dies in a summer. Keep the nameplate. Ask what gauge they put. A new motor may be wiser if the body is rusted and the pump is older than the children.

Should I change the MCB to a higher rating so it stops tripping?

No. If the MCB were tripping, you would still not upsize it to force the motor to run. Your case is the opposite: the MCB is already too generous. Fix the pump, the starter, and the water, not the breaker size.
